The art project this year will feature a planetarium surrounded by celestial rings that rise up from the playa surface and submerge underground. The following is a list of the various art related projects.

Ring Project

The Goal:

A 100 foot long ring comes up from the playa 1/2 way around the dome and back into the earth. The ring is covered with pink fabric for visibility during the day, and lights at night. The plan is to use inexpensive steel conduit for the frame.

Estimated Budget: $400
Major Tasks:
  1. (2) Metal Base Plates for the Rings
  2. Welding 10 10 foot sections with connectors
  3. Getting Pink Fabric ~ 5' X 100'
  4. (3) Metal supports with bases to hold up rings
  5. Testing

Ring Lighting Project

The Goal:

Lighting for the Rings. Ideally we would like to have the sides of the rings lit up with fiber optics that could change color and twinkle and the center of the rings lit up by a full color led array with leds spaced one foot apart -- 500 LEDs total.

Interior Skin Project

The Goal:

This is a fabric ceiling for inside the Dome that will be used to project stars against. It will be a basic semi sphere. One potential material is canvas drop cloths which are cheap, white, and opaque. If there is not time to do this we can reuse the white parachute. If the planetarium is constructed by running fiber then more thought will have to go into the ceiling.

  1. Acquire fabric
  2. cut fabric

Exterior Skin Project

The Goal:

We need to be able to block out light, as well as dust and other elements. The skin will consist of three layers. The first will be the interior fabric, the second will be silver tarpaulin, and the third will be aluminum shade fabric to give the dome a space age look.

Exterior Lighting Project

The Goal:

We have plenty of par can lights for the exterior. We want the exterior lighting to accent the rings, dome, and camp with deeper colors that do not overpower the lighting on the rings.

Space Port Entrance Project

The Goal:

This is the entryway into the planetarium. It is where people take off their shoes. It would be great to have this block light from the outside. Another goal is to have this look like an airlock or some sort of space port.

The space port represents a great importunity for interactivity. Some one could voluntarily hang out in the space port greeting people, checking tickets etc. Open the pod bay doors hal.

Ventilation Project

The Goal:

Since the dome will be sealed off this box will house the air conditioner and the sub woofer outside, but with a port into the dome. Ideally we would like to get a larger AC unit, we currently have a 5000 btu unit.

Planetarium Project

The Goal:

To either place or project stars on the ceiling of the dome. There are a couple of approaches to this. The first would be to string fiber optic lights up and have fixed stars in the ceiling. The other would be to build a fiber optic projector. Both have advantages and disadvantages. There would also need to be additional dimable lighting ideally a system that would shift from day to night every 30 minutes or so.
